Is there a fee to join?

No, membership is free.

Who can join?

Greyhounds and any other sighthounds (for example Whippets, Salukis etc). We like to think that it's the dog that's the member!

Do you have any rules or regulations?

Our walks take place in public areas and the pups are yours not ours, so please keep the following in mind:

  • Your dog is your responsibility at all times and Central Alberta Greyhound Walking Club accepts no responsibility for any injuries to you or your dog or any injury/damage caused by you or your dog.
  • All dogs should be muzzled when being introduced to each other before a walk.
  • Please do not use retractable leashes - They are unsafe for greyhounds and are easily tangled when several dogs are walked together.
  • Pick up your poop! This is a city bylaw.
  • Obey all signs on the trails.
  • Be courteous while on the trails - we will be sharing them with cyclists, joggers, rollerbladers etc.
  • Ensure that you and your pup are dressed appropriately for the weather. Bring coats and booties if necessary.
  • HAVE FUN!

How often are walks scheduled?

Walks take place every month and are usually scheduled for the third Sunday. Summer walks will normally start at 10:00am to avoid walking during the hottest part of the day. Winter walks will take place at 1:00pm to allow the temperature to rise.

How do I find out if a walk is cancelled?

We will try our best to give as much notice as possible in case of cancellation of a walk. Please check our website before leaving for a walk, or call Andy or Sonia at 403.309.5559. Walks will be cancelled in the event of heavy rain or snow, strong winds or if the temperature is below -15 Celsius.

What do I need to bring?

Poop bags, leash, muzzle, coat/boots, water and of course your hound!

Are other breeds of dogs welcome?

We would prefer to limit our walks to greyhounds and other sighthounds. Some greyhounds are too easily distracted by other breeds of dogs and when walked together may be more interested in the other dogs than walking in the right direction! Also one of the primary goals of the club is to raise awareness of what we feel is a very special breed. It is solely the responsibility of each dog owner to keep their pets safe and under control.

If you have any other questions or comments please contact Andy or Sonia at info@greyhoundwalking.com or 403.309.5559.
